The IFI Patent Intelligence
IPC-8/USPTO Classification Concordance represents data based on the Eighth Edition of the International
Patent Classification (IPC) manual.* The
IPC to U.S. Classification references have been constructed using live data
from the IFI
CLAIMSÒ patent database and represent actual IPC codes assigned to
affected patents by
IFI's concordance
tool can point you to comparable classes in the IPC and USPTO classification
schemes. The Concordance analyzes the
IPCs actually assigned by USPTO patent examiners to all

To view
corresponding U.S. Classification entries for an IPC:
Click on the
IPC Order button at the top of the screen to activate the IPC Code Index in
the far left frame of the browser window.

Then scroll
through the IPC index listing to locate the main IPC of interest. (Alternatively, type in the IPC class in the
space provided and hit the Submit button.)

Click on the
selected IPC hyperlink to display the corresponding IPC to U.S. Class
Concordance entries in the right hand frame.
Typing in the IPC and hitting the Submit button also does this.
Hover over the page numbers at the top or bottom to see on which page a specific IPC falls.

The browser
displays the complete listing for the selected main IPC which provides
information for each full IPC and the corresponding full U.S. Classes with
which it is associated. This list is
formatted to display the full IPC, followed by the total number of

example that follows, the 18 patents found in U.S. Class 172-371.000 correspond
to 14% of the total patents classified as IPC A01B 1/00.

The H hyperlinks appearing on each US Class row
may be used to display the Hierarchical information for that particular U.S.
Class.


The

percentage value displayed to the right of the listed U.S. Class also functions
as a hyperlink into the U.S. Class to IPC section of the concordance. This section lists U.S. Classes and the IPCs
with which they are associated. In the
following example, if the user clicks on the 17% link
appearing next to U.S. Class 172-256.000, the browser window would display all
the IPC classes which have been associated with
that specific US Class :

column immediately preceding the IPC Title may be used to display the
hierarchical information for said IPC
code, analogous to the H hyperlink to

The browser displays the complete listing for the selected main US Class which provides information for each full US Class and the corresponding full IPC code with which it is associated. This list is formatted to display the full US Class, followed by the total number of U.S. patents to which that particular subclass was assigned, followed by the list of IPC codes which appeared in those patents, followed by the percentage * breakdown. The percentage indicates the portion of total patents found in each of the corresponding IPC classes associated with the particular U.S Class.

* To save space and make the results more meaningful, IPC codes representing less than 5% of total patents are not provided.
In the example that follows, the 307 patents
found in U.S. Class 424-001.110 21% correspond to IPC A61K 51/00,
15% to A61K 51/04, 7% to A61K 49/00, and 6% to A61K 51/12.

Click on the US Class code hyperlink to display the particular class and its surrounding hierarchy. The specific subclass, in this case 424-001.110 will be highlighted in red.

The percentage
